VETERANS DAY: Medford vets get up close and personal with MHS students

Veterans Day may be Nov. 11, but for Medford High School students, education about the holiday came a few days early.

On Monday, roughly 40 veterans visited classrooms in the school to talk about their experiences in the military. The event, which has been held annually since 2001, is organized by the Medford Office of Veterans Services and the MHS Social Studies Department

Earnest Lindsay, director of Veterans Services, said the program has been popular from the beginning.

“This year we have the most women we’ve ever had, and the most veterans all together,” Lindsay said. “It’s a real collaboration between the city and the school.”

The program brings a variety of veterans into several high school classes, including those who have served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf and the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

One of the younger veterans on hand was Medford Police Officer Charles Hartnett, himself only a few years removed from Medford High School. He spoke to Liz Daneu’s social studies class early on Nov. 9.
